“We Will Come Out of the Crisis by the End of the Year”

Wednesday June 10th, 2009

Prime Minister Erdogan expressed that there was hope that by the end of the year the effects of the economic crisis will have passed, and stated; “revitalisation will begin by the last quarter of the year.” Erdogan also stated that he had considered holding a meeting with DTP, however when he heard the news that ten more soldiers had died in the line of duty, he changed his mind.

Erdogan participated in a television program hosted by Ankara Representative Mehment Akarca on atv, in which he stated he will announce a campaign this summer in order for the effects of the economic crisis to be experienced at minimal levels. During the program, Erdogan answered a series of questions posed by SABAH journalists Mehmet Barlas, Hasan Bulent Kahraman and Okan Muderrisoglu. Erdogan stated that by the end of the year, we will have come out from the economic crisis. Prime Minister Erdogan gave the following messages regarding economic developments:

IMF ECONOMY SHOULD TALK

“I am talking about the IMF playing their pen according to political events. The economy should speak for itself. If you try to play on our organizational structure, it will not work. It is not possible for us to regard an autonomous National Income Administration warmly. We are not taking into account our IMF debt, we don’t have this issue. We have a seven to seven and a half billion debt. When we came into power, that debt was at 25 billion. Our perspective provides us with the advantage in international economic relations. Is it to our advantage, or not? There are those that argue both sides. We will look into what would be an advantage. We are never prisoners.”

SUMMER UNEMPLOYMENT CAMPAIGN

”We will announce a campaign this summer. The target will be to access 500,000 people, more or less. The cost to us for this package will be at 250 million TL. This will in fact benefit us significantly; there is this aspect of it. We are a nation which has been marginally affected by the global crisis, however to say we have completely come out of it would be wrong. We are now in a negative situation. However, we are a nation that is hopeful that we will slowly break out of the crisis by the end of the year. We are witnessing economic activity in automotive and property sales. These are due to the steps taken regarding private consumption tax and VAT and when we say there is money, this is what we mean… We have taken a number of social steps and by the end of the year revitalisation will begin. Those figures will be evident in 2010.”
